Can the severity of endometriosis be determined by blood tests?
Endometriosis is a chronic progressive disease that can affect the ovaries, tubes, uterus, inner abdominal membrane, bladder, urinary tubes and intestines. While gynecological examination and ultrasound are often sufficient for diagnosis, in some cases MRI supports the diagnosis.
So, is there a blood test used to determine the severity of endometriosis?
For this purpose, many blood markers such as cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), cytokines, and vascular growth factors have been examined in scientific studies. It has been reported that each of them can be found at different levels in endometriosis, but it has been stated that there are no definite generalizable results.
In our study we conducted for this purpose; When the control group and patients with advanced endometriosis were compared, caspase-3 blood test was found to be higher in patients with advanced endometriosis, with 90% sensitivity and 87% specificity values.
In order for the study results to be generalized, these results need to be confirmed with similar studies to be conducted on a large number of patients and in different centers.
