What is a Submucosal Fibroid? – Patient Information Guide

What is a Submucosal Fibroid?

A submucosal fibroid is a type of fibroid that grows towards the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium). It is one of the fibroids that causes the most complaints because it affects the uterine cavity.

Characteristics

• Grows towards the uterine cavity
• Can cause symptoms even if small
• Is the type of fibroid most frequently associated with bleeding

Symptoms

• Excessive menstrual bleeding
• Prolonged periods
• Intermenstrual bleeding
• Anemia
• Infertility or miscarriage

Why is it Important?

Submucosal fibroids can make it difficult for the embryo to implant in the uterus and can negatively affect pregnancy formation.

How is it Diagnosed?

• Ultrasound (especially transvaginal ultrasound)
• Saline infusion sonography
• Hysteroscopy (the most definitive diagnostic method)

Treatment

• Treatment is recommended if there are complaints
• Usually removed with hysteroscopy
• Can be treated vaginally, without an incision

Advantageous Treatment Method

With hysteroscopic myomectomy, the fibroid is directly removed from inside the uterus, ensuring rapid recovery.

Clinical Fact

Even if small, submucosal fibroids can cause severe bleeding and infertility. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Conclusion

A submucosal fibroid is an important type of fibroid that affects the uterine cavity. With appropriate treatment, complaints largely improve.
