Rectocele – A Comprehensive Guide

What is a Rectocele?

A rectocele is a herniation of the rectum (the final section of the large intestine) into the posterior wall of the vagina. It develops as a result of pelvic floor weakness.

What Causes It?

• Vaginal births
• Pelvic floor weakness
• Menopause (decreased estrogen)
• Chronic constipation
• Straining habit
• Obesity

Symptoms

• Feeling of fullness in the vagina
• Difficulty during defecation
• Sensation of incomplete emptying
• Need for manual support from the vagina
• Sometimes urinary problems

Grading

• Mild: Limited within the vagina
• Moderate: Reaches the vaginal opening
• Severe: May protrude outside the vagina

Diagnosis

• Gynecological examination
• Rectal examination
• Defecography or urodynamic tests if necessary

Treatment Options

1. Lifestyle changes
2. Pelvic floor exercises
3. Constipation treatment
4. Vaginal pessary
5. Surgical treatment

Surgical Treatment

Vaginal posterior wall repair (posterior colporrhaphy) is performed. The aim is to strengthen the support between the rectum and the vagina.

Who Needs Surgery?

• Severe prolapse
• Severe defecation problems
• Conditions affecting quality of life

Prevention

• Avoiding constipation
• Fiber-rich diet
• Kegel exercises
• Avoiding excessive straining

Clinical Fact

Rectocele often occurs together with cystocele or other pelvic organ prolapses.

Conclusion

Rectocele is a treatable condition. With proper treatment, symptoms can be significantly reduced.
