What is MRI (Magnetic Resonance)? Working Principle and General Information

What is MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced imaging method that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It does not involve ionizing radiation and is therefore considered safe.

How Does MRI Work?

The MRI machine creates a strong magnetic field. Hydrogen atoms in the body align with this field. When radiofrequency waves are sent, these atoms absorb energy and emit signals as they return to their original positions. These signals are processed by a computer and converted into images.

Types of MRI Imaging

T1 and T2-weighted images are the most commonly used sequences. There are also special techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), contrast-enhanced MRI, and functional MRI.

Advantages of MRI

Its high soft tissue resolution, lack of radiation, and provision of detailed anatomical information are its most significant advantages.

Disadvantages of MRI

Long scan times, the feeling of being in an enclosed space (claustrophobia), and limited use in patients with metal implants are among the disadvantages.

When is MRI Used?

It is widely used in the evaluation of brain, spine, joint, abdominal organ, and pelvic diseases. It plays an important role in deep infiltrative diseases such as endometriosis.

What is Contrast-Enhanced MRI?

MRI performed with contrast material allows for clearer evaluation of vascular structures and lesions.

Is MRI Safe?

MRI is safe because it does not involve radiation. However, the use of contrast material should be carefully evaluated during pregnancy and in patients with kidney failure.

Preparation Before MRI

Metal objects must be removed. Fasting or contrast material administration may be required for some examinations.

When is an MRI Scan Performed?

It is preferred when sufficient information cannot be obtained with ultrasound or other methods, or when a detailed examination is required.
