How Many Days Does IVF Treatment Take? – Comprehensive Guide

How Long Does the IVF Process Take?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is generally completed within one menstrual cycle and typically lasts 2–3 weeks. However, the total duration may extend with the preparation period.

1. Preparation Period

Pre-menstrual evaluation, hormone tests, and planning are carried out. This process can take a few days to 1-2 weeks.

2. Ovarian Stimulation (10–12 Days)

It begins on the 2nd-3rd day of menstruation. Ovaries are stimulated with daily injections, and follicles are grown.

3. Egg Trigger Shot

It is administered when follicles reach sufficient size. Ovulation occurs 34–36 hours later.

4. Egg Retrieval (OPU)

It is performed approximately 36 hours after the trigger shot. The procedure takes 10–15 minutes.

5. Fertilization and Embryo Development (3–5 Days)

Collected eggs are fertilized in the laboratory, and embryos are monitored.

6. Embryo Transfer

It is usually performed on day 3 or day 5. It is a painless and short procedure.

7. Waiting Period (10–12 Days)

After embryo transfer, approximately 10–12 days are waited for a pregnancy test.

Total Duration

From the start of medication until the pregnancy test, it takes an average of 15–20 days.

Factors Affecting Duration

Factors such as the patient's age, ovarian reserve, the protocol used, and embryo freezing (freeze-all) can alter the duration.

Conclusion

IVF treatment is generally a process completed in a short time but requires careful planning.
