What is Uterine Septum? – Patient Information Guide

What is Uterine Septum?

Uterine septum is a congenital uterine malformation. It consists of tissue that partially or completely divides the uterine cavity into two.

How Does It Form?

During the development of the uterus in the womb, two channels need to fuse. If this fusion is incomplete, a septum may remain within the uterus.

Symptoms

• Often asymptomatic
• Recurrent miscarriages
• Infertility
• Preterm birth
• Rarely, menstrual irregularities

Why Is It Important?

The septum within the uterus can make embryo implantation difficult and lead to pregnancy losses.

How Is It Diagnosed?

• Ultrasound (3D ultrasound is more valuable)
• MRI imaging
• Hysteroscopy
• Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

Is Treatment Necessary?

• If asymptomatic, treatment is not always necessary
• If there are recurrent miscarriages or infertility, treatment is recommended

How Is Treatment Performed?

• Via hysteroscopy
• By entering through the vaginal route
• The septum is cut without an incision (septum resection)

After Surgery

• Generally rapid recovery
• Same-day discharge
• Return to normal life in a short time

Effect on Pregnancy

After treatment, the chance of pregnancy increases, and the risk of miscarriage decreases.

Clinical Fact

Uterine septum is one of the most common congenital uterine anomalies, and successful outcomes can be achieved with appropriate treatment.

Conclusion

Uterine septum can be a significant cause, especially in pregnancy losses. With diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the problem can largely be resolved.
