Types of Urinary Incontinence – A Comprehensive Guide

What is Urinary Incontinence?

It is the involuntary leakage of urine. It is quite common in women and has different types.

1. Stress Incontinence

It is characterized by urine leakage during coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise. Pelvic floor weakness is the most common cause.

2. Urge Incontinence

It occurs when there is a sudden and strong urge to urinate, leading to leakage before reaching the toilet. It is associated with overactive bladder.

3. Mixed Incontinence

It is the co-occurrence of both stress and urge type symptoms. It is one of the most common types.

4. Overflow Incontinence

It is characterized by continuous dribbling due to the bladder not emptying completely.

5. Functional Incontinence

It occurs due to physical or mental barriers preventing timely access to the toilet.

6. Transient Incontinence

It can temporarily occur due to urinary tract infections, medications, or acute illnesses.
