Bladder Exercise (Bladder Training) – Comprehensive Guide

What is Bladder Training?

Bladder exercise (bladder training) is a behavioral treatment method that aims to reorganize urination habits, increase bladder capacity, and control the urge sensation.

Who Is It Used For?

• Overactive bladder (OAB)
• Frequent urination
• Urge incontinence
• Frequent nighttime urination (nocturia)

Main Goal

To extend the intervals between urinations and enable the bladder to hold more urine.

How Is It Done?

1. Initially, the current urination frequency is determined
2. Go to the toilet at fixed intervals (e.g., 1 hour)
3. Even if there is an urge, try to complete the time
4. Gradually, intervals are increased (1.5–2–3 hours)

What to Do When the Urge Comes?

• Perform Kegel exercises
• Take deep breaths
• Distract yourself
• Do not go to the toilet immediately

Daily Program

• Keep a daily voiding diary
• Goal: To be able to urinate at 3–4 hour intervals

How Long Does It Take to Be Effective?

Significant improvement is usually seen within 4–8 weeks.

Points to Consider

• Avoid excessive fluid intake
• Reduce caffeine
• Apply regularly

Advantages

• Drug-free treatment
• No side effects
• Long-term benefit

Clinical Fact

Bladder training is one of the first-line and most effective methods in the treatment of overactive bladder.

Conclusion

When applied regularly, it increases bladder control and reduces urinary incontinence.
