ASCUS Management
Smear Result ASC-US: What Should Be Done? – Patient Information Guide
What is ASC-US?
ASC-US (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance) is a smear result indicating mild changes in cervical cells, but the reason for these changes is not clear. It is the most common abnormal smear result.
General Approach
ASC-US is often associated with transient HPV infection and usually resolves on its own. However, regular follow-up is important.
What is Done Under 30 Years Old?
• Smear re-testing is generally recommended within 6–12 months
• Alternatively, an HPV test can be performed
• In most cases, no additional procedure is required
What is Done Over 30 Years Old?
• An HPV test is performed
• If HPV is negative, routine screening is resumed
• If HPV is positive, colposcopy is recommended
Approach Based on HPV Result
• HPV negative: Risk is low, routine check-ups continue
• HPV positive: The cervix should be examined in detail (colposcopy)
When is Closer Follow-up Needed?
• HPV 16/18 positivity
• Recurrent ASC-US results
• Presence of other abnormal smear findings
What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is an evaluation method that allows for a detailed examination of the cervix under magnification. If necessary, a biopsy can be taken.
Clinical Reality
The vast majority of ASC-US cases do not indicate serious disease and return to normal over time.
Conclusion
An ASC-US result does not require panic. However, follow-up according to doctor's recommendations is crucial for the early detection of potential risks.
