vNOTES surgery for Ovarian Cysts

vNOTES surgery for Ovarian Cysts

Although most benign ovarian cysts disappear spontaneously during post-menstrual checks, some cysts may persist, increase in size, put pressure on surrounding organs, cause constant groin pain, and may carry the risk of rupture and ovarian cancer.

In these cases, instead of waiting, surgical removal of the ovary or just the cyst is recommended. The most commonly recommended surgical technique today is the Laparoscopy technique, which is performed by making 1-2 cm incisions in the abdominal area. Apart from this, it is also possible to surgically remove ovarian masses with the vNOTES (laparoscopic surgery performed completely vaginally, without making any incisions in the abdominal area) technique, which has become more common in the world in recent years.

So which surgery is more advantageous?

In our study to find the answer to this question; The surgical results of a total of 114 patients were examined retrospectively. The patients had similar ages, weights, number of births, and mass sizes.

According to the study results, the average duration of surgery in the vNOTES group was 48.33 minutes, while this time was 72.23 minutes in the laparoscopy group. was. Postoperative hospital stay was 48 hours in the laparoscopy group and 38.4 hours in the vNOTES group. Postoperative 6th and 24th hour pain scores were significantly lower in the vNOTES group compared to the laparoscopy group.

In conclusion, vNOTES as an alternative to laparoscopy in the management of ovarian cysts appears to be a successful, feasible surgical approach with less surgery and hospital stay, less pain scores, and better cosmetic results.
